One of my favourite things about Ubuntu is the ability to customize the UI and installing Elegant Gnome is one of the first things I do after a fresh installation. Elegant Gnome is a theme pack that gives your desktop a very slick look(compared to the default theme) including matching Firefox and Chrome themes and an awesome icon set.
My netbook with Elegant Gnome showing the nautilus theme, also using Docky |
To install this theme in Ubuntu 10.10 just do the following:
Open a terminal and run the following commands:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:am-monkeyd/nautilus-elementary-ppa
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade
nautilus -q
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:elegant-gnome/ppa && sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install elegant-gnome ttf-droid
then go Applications -> Accessories -> Elegant Gnome and select install pack
After reboot go to System -> Administration ->Update Manager and update otherwise nautilus UI will be missing icons.

Oh yeah... that's good stuff... really makes the whole experience much nicer... thanks!
ReplyDeleteExcellent Theme... also just in case, how would i uninstall it? Not that i'm going to but for future reference. Thanx
ReplyDeleteto uninstall you can just open the elegant gnome installer and revert back to your old setup(it backs it up when you apply the elegant gnome theme for the first time) and then just uninstall via the software center.
ReplyDeleteI love the theme. Since adding though, I've had to change to re select extra visual effects, otherwise, I have no window borders. (Asus eeepc using poulsbo drivers Ubuntu 10.10). Do you know of a setting that might have been missed during the install? Thanks!
ReplyDeleteGreat theme, but any reason for why you mess up Nautilus? F3 or call it Extra Pane is lost when using this.
ReplyDeleteNow I have tried doing the last part and skipped the nautilus part, works well.
Why do you need to upgrade Nautilus?
@Ronny you don't need to do the nautilus update i just think the newer version goes better with the theme so i included it.
ReplyDeleteCan you post a link to your wallpaper?
ReplyDelete@carl the background is one of the default Ubuntu 10.10 if you go to change background you should see it in the list
ReplyDeleteThis does not work, most things give a 404 error. I ignore them, and when it comes time to find the Elegant Gnome in the Applications->Accessories menu, it is not there. Even after update and restart.
ReplyDeleteWorks perfectly fine! Thanks.
ReplyDeleteBrilliant, straightforward walkthrough, fixed my problem and shamed all of my attempts of making my distro look pretty, that i thank you for.
